The Action Potentials of the Stomach

چکیده

The potential changes associated with the conduction of impulses in muscle and nerve can be interpreted only if they are led off from small regions of the tissue. This is accomplished most satisfactorily by recording monophasic potentials or by recording the potentials in the intact tissue with differential electrodes. In the study of the stomach only tJhe second of these methods is practical. However, as shown by Cole and Curtis (7), the differential potential is the first derivative of the monophasic potential provided the distance between the leads is appreciably less than the length of the active region. It is possible, therefore, to derive the monophasic potential mathematically. It is important to realize that missible for recording differential the maximal potentials is and that it must be the smaller, the muscle the waves are shorter than distance between the leads per-not the same for different tissues shorter each in any other wave of excitation. In smooth tissue studied. Therefore, the leads should be very small and their distance should be preferably less than one millimeter. Some events of the action potential of smooth muscle, like the rising phase or spike potentials, take up a width of less than one millimeter (5) and such events cannot be resolved accurately with the methods available at a the present time. For illustration, the may be mentioned (p. 697). During potentials of the stomach of the each peristaltic wave, as many as P% guinea twenty spikes can be observed. Since the active region, as seen by direct observation, is less than one centimeter wide, the spikes are spaced on the muscle at a distance of less than half a millimeter. The failure to recognize this point, the use of large electrodes separated one centimeter or more, largely explains why previous investigators obtained widely disagreeing results and why their records show such marked variability. Records obtained by Alvarez and Mahoney (2) with a slow galvanometer show no resemblance to those which will be described below. Richter (9) using a string galvanometer and monopolar (not monophasic) leads recorded during each contraction several slow waves, beginning with a positive deflection. Two of these waves undoubtedly are identical with the R and T wave described below. METHOD. Dogs (5-7 kgm.), cats and guinea pigs anesthetized with nembutal were used. The abdomen of the animal was inside a heated and humidified chamber. The stomach was exposed by a longitudinal …

A Hybrid Classifier for Characterizing Motor Unit Action Potentials in Diagnosing Neuromuscular Disorders

Background: The time and frequency features of motor unit action potentials (MUAPs) extracted from electromyographic (EMG) signal provide discriminative information for diagnosis and treatment of neuromuscular disorders. However, the results of conventional automatic diagnosis methods using MUAP features is not convincing yet. Objective: The main goal in designing a MUAP characterization system ...

Neuroprotective effect of minocycline on PTZ-induced epileptiform activity and alterations of the shape of action potentials in snail neurons assessed by using intracellular recordings

Introduction: Epilepsy is a neurological disorder that affects 1-2% of the world population and about 30% of patients are resistant to antiepileptic drug therapy. Therefore, new treatment alternatives are needed. In the present study, the possible neuroprotective effect of minocycline against epileptiform activity induced by pentylenetetrazole (PTZ) was assessed. Methods: Conventional intra...

A new reduced mathematical model to simulate the action potential in end plate of skeletal muscle fibers

Usually mathematicians use Hodgkin-Huxley model or FitzHug-Nagumo model to simulate action potentials of skeletal muscle fibers. These models are electrically excitable, but skeletal muscle fibers are stimulated chemically. To investigate skeletal muscle fibers we use a model with six ordinary differential equations. This dynamical system is sensitive to initial value of some variables so it is...

Effects of ionic parameters on behavior of a skeletal muscle fiber model

All living cells have a membrane which separates inside the cell from it's outside. There is a potential difference between inside and outside of the cell. This potential difference will change during an action potential. It is quite common to peruse action potentials of skeletal muscle fibers with the Hodgkin-Huxley model. Since Hodgkin and Huxley summarized some controlling currents like inwa...

Comparison of the effect of quasitrapezoidal and rectangular pulses on bio- electrical activity, calcium spike properties and afterhyperpolarization potentials of Fl cells of Helix aspersa using intracellular recording

While the effect of changes of stimulus waveform (quasitrapezoidal and rectangular current pulses) on nerve activation is clear, but there is no evidence on the effect of quasitrapezoidal pulses on ionic currents of cellular membrane. In the present study, the effect of depolarizing quasi-trapezoidal current pulses, in comparison with that of depolarizing rectangular current pulses, on firing...

Monophasic and diphasic action potentials of the stomach.

T HERHYTHMICACTIVITY of thestomach is associated with action potentials which are similar to those of other visceral muscles, including the heart (I). In the work reported here, these potentials were further analyzed by recording monophasic potentials and by leading off separately from longitudinal and circular muscles. Also the action of some drugs was investigated. The fact that monophasic po...
